SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

DESCRIPTION:
The Buea School for the Deaf was established in 2003 by a deaf couple who would visit villages searching for families with deaf children, many of whom are unaware that others exist with hearing impairments. Students live at the school, learning to read, write and sign along with food, lodging, friendship and support.

FOCUS:
There are currently over 50 students at the school and with no government assistance, they rely solely on donations. Many parents cannot afford the $350/year fee and the school refuses to turn away any prospective students. Aside from financial assistance, the school requires assessment materials, library books, teaching materials, computers and printers, craft supplies and other resources.

UPDATE:
In addition to the immediate needs of the school, a new facility is necessary in the longer term as they are currently renting space and the lease will expire in a year. Rather than negotiate a new lease and have to uproot the children in the future, a permanent facility will be required. Once the facility is procured, ICA will re-commence efforts to provide supplies.
