EDUCATION

DESCRIPTION:
Studies have proven that providing education is one of the best strategies for breaking the hold of poverty. With average family annual income less than $1 per day in the Lebialiem Valley, less than one third of the children attend elementary school and no secondary school exists.

FOCUS:
Knowing that education can help to eliminate poverty, ICA is dedicated to providing all children of all abilities with a proper education. Construction of five elementary schools is currently underway and all are due to be completed in early 2010.

UPDATE:
ICA continues to provide on-going support for various village schools with supplies of all kinds. In Besali, a bridge must be built across a river that cuts through the village and drowns many children every year who must cross the river (waist high on adults) twice a day to attend school. In November 2009, the ICA education committee, lead by Kristin Reid, will be in the valley conducting participative planning and research, determining barriers to education and how best they can be overcome.
