SOLAR PANELS

DESCRIPTION:
More than 80% of Africa's population is without electricity. In African villages, many families are crowded into small one-room shanties where light is obtained from poisonous kerosene lanterns. The World Bank estimates that 780 million women and children breathing kerosene fumes inhale the equivalent of smoke from 2 packs of cigarettes a day.

FOCUS:
ICA is committed to bringing solar panels to villages as a safe and renewable source of energy. Each panel costs approximately $200 and lasts for over 25 years.

UPDATE:
Villages are forming co-operatives to collect the weekly kerosene allowance. Every villager in the co-operative will be given a solar lighting system for his or her home. Instead of purchasing kerosene the money will be applied to the cost of the granted solar panel and after two and a half years, the villager will own the solar system. The kerosene money collected by the co-operative will be used to purchase more solar systems for more villagers and the project will become self-sustaining.
