WATER PURIFICATION PLAN
DESCRIPTION:
Until recently ICA water projects have focused on supplying untreated water to remote villages. The next phase of ICA’s water strategy focuses on purifying the water being transported, as it has been tested and displays extremely high levels of bacterial contamination.
FOCUS:
ICA plans to distribute water filtration systems that villagers can manage and maintain locally. A Canadian-made bio sand filter has been sourced that involves 45-gallon drums, layers of sand, gravel and charcoal. The plastic drums will last forever, the sand can be replaced locally and the charcoal needs replacing every 7 years.
UPDATE:
ICA is working with LWDG (Life & Water Development Group), a Cameroonian group, to get filters to the villages. In each village, ICA is sending four representatives for 3 weeks of educational training with LWDG prior to the villages receiving the filters.
