CROSS RIVER GORILLA
DESCRIPTION:
The Cross River Gorilla is the rarest primate in the world. It's rapidly diminishing habitat extends into the forests that surround the villages of Western Cameroon that ICA is working in. Although poaching is no longer a concern, competition for land as the villagers exploit the jungle for farming, has destroyed much of the gorillas' habitat and increased the pressure on the last 300 surviving animals
FOCUS:
A road is being built into this isolated valley (with full support of ERUDEF the environmental group that works to protect the gorillas) because it will give villagers economic opportunities that the isolation prevents. This will greatly ease the pressure on the animals and will help ERUDEF better protect them.
UPDATE:
In order to replenish parts of the jungle already destroyed, ICA is working with local schools to get trees planted by students. For every tree planted, ICA will contribute books and supplies to the school.
