CASSAVA/NUT GRINDERS

DESCRIPTION:
ICA is committed to helping the women of these six extremely isolated villages organize into committees while providing business models, training and start up materials for cassava grinders. Women currently spend hours collecting and hand-grinding cassava (a potatoe-like tuber that is a diet staple).

FOCUS:
ICA will provide the initial grinder that instantly reduces two hours of work into less than five minutes allowing the women to not only grind their own cassava, but also enough to sell at the market. A committee of village women is responsible for charging others to grind the cassava and caring for the grinder.

UPDATE:
ICA first bought a cassava grinder for Lewoh village in 2004 and the village women now have a $1,600.00 profit (almost enough to purchase a second grinder). Five villages will receive cassava grinders and one village that relies on nuts for oil, food, etc. will receive a nut cracking machine for a similar project.
