HEALTH

DESCRIPTION:
Cameroon has a population of 17 million people with only 7 physicians per 100,000 people, one of the lowest ratios in the world (UNDP 2004). The extremely isolated villages that ICA works with have no access roads and often the very ill must be carried – 5 hours on foot – by stretcher through the jungle to reach the nearest medical centre.

FOCUS:
The first medical center was completed in early 2009, servicing 6,000 people across four villages. The recently created ICA medical committee, lead by Dr. Tuz Gooderham, went to Cameroon in 2009 to work with the local health care providers and villagers to assess the needs of the population.

UPDATE:
The ICA medical committee will return in May 2010 to begin implementation and participative planning processes that address the extremely high mortality and morbidity rates of the villagers, in particular children.
