HEALTH
DESCRIPTION:
Cameroon has a population of 17 million people with only 7 physicians per 100,000 people, one of the lowest ratios in the world (UNDP 2004). In March 2007, a four-person medical team from Toronto spent nine days in Lewoh tending to the medical needs of the villagers. The extremely isolated villages that ICA works with have no access roads and often the very ill must be carried – 5 hours on foot – by stretcher through the jungle to reach the nearest medical centre.
FOCUS:
ICA has committed to building medical centers where none exist, providing medical supplies to these and existing centers and arranging visits from Western medical agencies when required.
UPDATE:
ICA has sent medical equipment and supplies, allowing medical staff to provide required treatment to those in need. In March 2007 a 4 person medical team from Toronto spent 9 days in Lewoh tending to the medical needs of the villagers. In April 2008, the medical center in Menji-Lekeng officially opened.
