ROMANIA
During the rule of former dictator Nicolae Ceasusescu, extreme poverty and a mandated number of births per woman forced many families to register births and then leave the children at an orphanage. There were an estimated 300,000 children abandoned during his reign.
ICA Canada began working in Romania in 1991 in direct response to the desperate conditions that existed in the orphanages. ICA is committed to empowering these forgotten children to create lives with a future.
